An unfinished 1990s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic is finally getting an ending.
io9 reports IDW Publishing is reviving TMNT Volume 3 from writer Gary Carlson and artist Frank Fosco. The non-canonical comic ran for 23 issues from 1996 to 1999. However, it was canceled before getting a proper conclusion.
IDW is rebranding the series as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Urban Legends and will re-release all 23 issues with reprints by colorist Adam Guzowski. The comic will also get three new, final issues from Carlson and Fosco to finally give the series an ending.
“IDW wanted to do it,” Carlson said. “The fans seem interested in it. Our run has always been the ‘black sheep’—unofficial stories of the TMNT. At the time we were doing a back to basics/not the TV cartoons version of the guys and the fanbase then didn’t buy into it.”
TMNT Vol. 3 is infamous for being one of the more darker takes on the property, featuring grim plotlines for the Turtles.
The first issue of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Urban Legends will be released on May 16.
