Time was, you went to buy a console and it had a pack-in game. The NES had Super Mario Bros. The Super NES had Super Mario World. The Sega Genesis had Altered Beast in the pre-Sonic era, believe it or not. Now consoles don’t have pack-in games when they first launch. But eventually console bundles are introduced to entice new customers, and they represent some of the best ways to save some dough when jumping into a new console ecosystem.
An even more recent phenomenon is adding a game to a console customized to pay homage to the very game you want to play. The PS4 has several such bundles, some of which have been discontinued, but are still kicking around warehouses and available for purchase, often at a pretty healthy discount.
Below is our buyer’s guide for all the major PS4 and PS4 Pro console bundles on the market, with details on what’s included in each. Some of them are older and no longer represent the best value, but we included them just in case the design catches your eye. The bottom line? The God of War PS4 Pro bundle detailed below is the best value from a pure dollars standpoint. A PS4 Pro console + $60 game for $400 just can’t be beat.
Here it is, the latest PS4 Pro bundle. The PS4 Pro is the 1TB model, so you won’t run out of room nearly as fast, and it’s customized with a Norse, God of War theme on the console and the controller. It’s pretty slick, and it includes the upcoming God of War, in which a father and son grow closer through the mutual bond of quick time events and all-around violence.
This is the same hardware as the God of War bundle, but it’s Star Wars themed. You get Star Wars Battlefront II, which despite its reputation is still a totally respectable shooter, but the real draw here is that awesome controller and Star Wars console.
If you want to upgrade your original PS4 to a PS4 Slim 1TB, or you’re buying new and want a game, too, this discontinued 1TB PS4 includes Battlefront II but none of the cool customization of the PS4 Pro bundle.
This is another discontinued bundle with a great pack in game, but unlike the PS4 Battlefront bundle, this one is completely customized in WW2-era camouflage. This is the only way you can get that color DualShock 4, too. It’s not the best pure value for a bundle, but we’ve included it just in case the camo style speaks to you.
Before you buy this, you need to realize this is for the original Destiny, and isn’t the cheapest bundle around in terms of pure dollar value. We’re including it here just because it’s absolutely gorgeous. For our money it’s the best-looking limited edition PS4 console.
There aren’t too many of these left, and like the others, it’s also discontinued, so when it’s gone, it’s gone. You get one of the best PS4 exclusives, along with this super cool console and DualShock 4.
This is the bundle I bought when my launch-day PS4 started to sound like a jet taking off. Uncharted 4 is great and comes included, but it doesn’t have the cool color scheme and art of the other, limited-edition bundle. But it is the newer slim model – so if you’re in the market for an Uncharted bundle you’ll have to decide what’s more important to you.
