A Cheetos Movie Is in the Works

Based on the man behind the billion-dollar idea.

A movie about the creator of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos is in development.

Variety reports Fox Searchlight and DeVon Franklin are producing Flamin’ Hot, a film about Richard Montanez, the man who came up with the billion-dollar idea for Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. Lewis Colick (Ladder 49) is writing the script. A release date has not been set yet and no director is attached.

The story follows Montanez’s rise from working as a janitor at Frito-Lay to becoming an executive at PepsiCo and being referred to as the “Godfather of Multicultural Marketing.” Montanez’s idea to spice up the Cheetos flavor was inspired by the Mexican grilled corn dish elote, which is dressed in chile.

Montanez had a few weeks to prepare his presentation for the new flavor, and the rest, as they say, is history. Flamin’ Hot Cheetos would eventually help turn the Frito-Lay brand into a pop culture phenomenon.

In other movie news, Labyrinth is returning to theaters for a limited time and Netflix is adapting Dark Horse’s Polar.
